Paul Thomas: Faith can help you through issues small and large

On June 27th, 2024, Paul Thomas was on the job doing what he’s done for over 20 years—working in the Oregon wilderness. As a crew boss with the Oregon Department of Forestry, he led teams, including adults in custody, on trail maintenance projects. That day, while hauling dirt, Paul felt something give in his shoulder. He couldn’t lift his arm anymore.

At first, the emergency room believed it was a typical rotator cuff injury and recommended physical therapy. But Paul knew his body, and something didn’t feel right. He advocated for an MRI—and that decision changed the course of his life.

The MRI results didn’t show anything wrong with his rotator cuff, but doctors noticed something unusual in the bone. There was growing concern, yet no definitive answers. In July, Paul underwent a CAT scan; more imaging followed in August. A biopsy was finally performed on September 23rd. The results were life-altering: two-thirds of Paul’s humerus, all the way up to his shoulder, was filled with Chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

As a seasoned firefighter and crew boss, Paul was devastated to be pulled away during the heart of wildfire season; a time he’d normally be protecting the forest with his team. But even in the midst of the uncertainty, Paul had something powerful on his side: a strong support system.

October 24th marked the day of major surgery. The procedure involved removing two-thirds of his humerus and his shoulder, followed by a reverse shoulder replacement with a prosthetic bone. Recovery was intense. He had to wait six weeks before starting any shoulder movement. Physical therapy offered limited improvement, and now most of his shoulder movement relies on what strength he can build with at-home exercises.

Despite the physical challenges, Paul was determined to return to work. With his team and leadership's unwavering support, he resumed duties on modified assignment—training and overseeing crews.

Throughout it all, Paul remained focused on what matters most: his wife and son, family. They were his motivation to fight through each step of the journey. Paul's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of advocating for yourself. If something doesn’t feel right, push for answers – it could be something serious.

Beyond his work and family, Paul has always found purpose in serving others. A dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he continues to be actively involved in the youth program. His faith and community have been crucial pillars of support, offering strength through prayer, fellowship, and resilience.

Paul believes, “Finding faith can help you through issues small and large. Service to others is the best therapeutic thing we can do.”
