| DRAGONSLAYER Portland 2010 Recap |
|
The Second Annual Northwest Sarcoma Foundation DRAGONSLAYER Bike, Hike and Trike event was held on Saturday, May 22nd at Sellwood Riverfront Park in Portland. This year over 150 people participated in this event which was held to honor sarcoma patients and their families. Over $8,000.00 was raised with these funds going to support the programs we offer and grow our research fund.
Thank you to our many volunteers. Without your help this event could not take place. Thank you, also, to our participants and teams who not only walked, but also helped with fundraising. Eight teams participated this year. They include: Elias's Ultimate Alliance – The team walked in celebration of Elias' past, present and future! In 2002 Elias was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma at the age of 1. He went through many rounds of chemo and radiation. After five years of remission and two years of being considered completely cancer free, Elias is living a healthy life and having fun doing it. Team Danny – Team Danny walked in honor of Danny Keagabine. Team Danny was the first team to participate in the First Annual DRAGONSLAYER Portland event held last year. Faith, Love and Hope – The team walked in memory of their friend and mother, who was diagnosed with Liposarcoma and took on the fight AGAINST cancer and FOR others. Her goal before she died was to walk in a sarcoma walk, and to support research and development of a cure. Sadly, cancer took her before she was able to make the walk. She lived by three simple but very strong words: Faith, Love and Hope. Sarcoma Slammers – The team walked in honor of Kate VanNice, who is a seven year survivor of Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma. Team Thrive – Team Thrive is all about celebrating Sarcoma survivorship and paying tribute to those families affected by this disease. They walked in honor of Dave Minns, a 6+ year sarcoma survivor. Team Brad – Team Brad walked in memory of Brad Ventura who lost his fight to Rhabdomyosarcoma in June 2009 after a year-and-a-half-long battle. The team remembers Brad in part by continuing the fight through fundraising and raising awareness of this cancer. Team Brad's Video Team Sue – Team Sue walked in honor of Sue Brickner who is a sarcoma survivor and an inspiration to all that know her. Team Brad took home the top Fundraising Team Award as well at the Largest Team Award. Faith, Love and Hope took home the Spirit Award. Again, thank you to all who took part in this fabulous event. Please plan to join us for the Portland Dragonslayer 2011 and bring along a friend.
